Celebrating Litha

The flowers are blooming all over the place and it’s getting warmer. This is how we know Litha is approaching.

In the Witch’s Wheel of the Year Litha (20th-22nd June) is one of four lesser sabbaths and one of eight sabbaths in total. Sabbaths are exciting for us who practice witchcraft because during those eight times in a year we celebrate our Mother Nature and what she gives to us.

Litha, is the first sabbath to take place in summer. In fact, this time of the year is also called Midsummer (and celebrated as such by many religions from 20th to about 26th June) and even more specifically, the 21st June is said to be the Summer Solstice, meaning that that day is the longest and the following night is the shortest of the entire year. The main focus of the celebrations of Litha lies on the sun and it’s power.

I have Book of Shadows pages on the Wheel of the Year and Litha for you to download. The link you will find at the bottom of this post.

How to celebrate Litha

As always, considering that every single witch is different and has their own individual path, there are many different ways to celebrate Litha.
Just like for every of the eight Sabbaths you can spend some private time in NATURE to connect with our Mother.

One great tradition for Litha is having a BONFIRE and dancing around it and even jumping over it. It’s also a tradition to throw old or unwanted things into the fire as a means of cleansing yourself and your home. Always remember to stay safe though!

Another beautiful (and also easy and simple) activity for Litha is setting up an ALTAR with some beautiful items that correspond the sabbath.
Some witches hold very big and great festivities for the sabbaths but sabbaths can also be celebrated in a smaller scale. Take a look at the below list of correspondences for Litha and decide for yourself whether your celebrations shall include carrying a corresponding crystal in your pocket or wearing a corresponding colour or eating corresponding food… or whether you’d like to have a bonfire!

Litha Correspondences

  • Themes: Growth, Focus, Happiness, Fertility, Light, Cleansing, Health
  • Herbs: Lavender, Ivy, Elder, Ferns, Vervain, Honeysuckle, Carnation
  • Crystals: Tiger’s Eye, Jade, Quartz, Amber, Fluorite, Emerald, Opal
  • Foods: Mead, Red Wine, Honey, Herbs, Cheese, Seasonal Vegs & Fruits
  • Decoration: Oak & Ivy leaves, Honey Bee, Flowers, Sea Shells
  • Colours: White, Yellow, Ochre, Orange, Green, Blue

I might be in luck and actually be able to have a small bonfire this year! Cross your fingers for me ♡ This is the altar I have prepared for Litha:

My altar is the top of my witchy shelf. I like it for it’s aesthetic and because it’s not too obvious

This was it for Litha. I am excited for it! After Litha we will already be heading towards autumn which I honestly can’t wait for. But first, summer!

Here’s the link to my Book of Shadows. You can download/print info on the Wheel of the Year and Litha there!

Blessed be, lovely folks! Thanks for reading and I hope you’re all going to have a great time ♡
